We woke extra early to catch the first light over the bay. I loaded our kayaks onto the hitch, and we paddled out from Aransas Pass into coastal backwaters. The mirrored water, distant herons standing like statues, and the stillness made us feel like we were discovering a secret world. Mid-morning, we beached on a small sandbar and peeled off shells.

Returning, we took advantage of the resort’s amenities—lounged by the pool, let the dogs romp in the dog park, and dipped in for refreshing swims.

That evening we built a campfire near the RV and shared stories. I roasted foil-packet camp potatoes (sliced potatoes, onion, olive oil, herbs, wrapped in foil) and grilled sausages. For dessert, we wrapped bananas with chocolate chips in foil and buried them in embers until oozy.

Under a dome of stars, I told tales of past travels, and my partner teased me for being too poetic (but I saw him smiling). The crackling fire, scent of wood smoke, and soft gulf breezes—it was the perfect closing.
