I’d imagined catching redfish or trout in Aransas Bay and coming back triumphant with a haul for dinner. But our first two days? Not a nibble. I grew grumpy, blaming bad bait, tides, or beginner’s luck.
On day three, we decided to join a local fishing charter (there are several around Rockport/Aransas Pass). The deck was alive with laughter, sea spray, and hope. We landed a few keeper fish—flounder and trout—that afternoon. Back to camp, exhausted but exhilarated.
That evening, I pan-fried fillets in butter and garlic, with a side of camped rice (precooked rice warmed with onions, peppers, citrus). We ate with red wine (just me) and swapped big fish stories with our neighbors at the clubhouse.
The lesson: sometimes you make your own luck. The resort’s quiet, friendly vibe gave us space to reset, laugh at failure, and then celebrate success together.
